Peter Just back from a short break in Richmondshire. Which, for those that don't know, is in North Yorkshire.
This is the old shire centered on Richmond.
An area we have been meaning to visit for years.
This gave us the chance to visit Richmond itself; then across to Bolton & Middleham. Also up to little Bowes, and then across to impressive Barnard Castle. We stayed in a Landmark Trust place for the first time (look at their web-site), an old Grammer School from about the mid 1400's. This was at Kirby Hill. Where we looked down on the strangely positioned site of Ravensworth Castle. On the way back a quick visit to Brough. Visited here many years ago but it was raining. Then dinner opposite Hornby Castle (Lanc's).
As to our first stay in a Landmark property, very imressive. Though not a cheap stay for just two people. But no TV or phones for 5-days ... great ! Log fires and nights in overlooking the graveyard ! We are planning our next one. Maybe if we can book early enough ... part of a castle. Of which they have several.
